Does it change my file format?

By default no — JPG stays JPG, PNG stays PNG, WebP stays WebP, each one just re-encoded at higher compression so it shrinks while looking the same. If you want, switch the output format to WebP or AVIF, which usually compress noticeably smaller than JPG or PNG at the same quality.

JPG and WebP are re-encoded with MozJPEG and WebP at a high quality setting that looks identical for almost everything. PNG is reduced to a 256-color palette, then repacked losslessly — sharp for screenshots, logos, and flat graphics.
